Epurga-Cates, LLC, Turns Landfill Waste into Liquid Petrochemicals

Based in Tennessee, Michael Harrelson is a waste management entrepreneur who leads companies such as ECM of Ridgely and Rett Express. Michael Harrelson also heads Epurga-Cates, LLC, and is working to commercialize a patented waste-to-energy process developed by Mississippi State University (MSU) researchers. The proprietary technology takes various types of landfill waste and turns them into sources of energy.

The conversion process spans construction debris and municipal solid waste (MSW). The feed waste is initially sorted and conditioned into the uniform product refuse derived fuel (RDF). A gasification process using a conventional gasifier then creates an equimolar hydrogen and carbon monoxide mixture. This equimolar mixture serves as the feedstock for generating liquid petrochemicals via the MSU-developed technology.

The reaction employs molybdenum oxide (MoO3) as a catalyst in enabling the conversion of syngas into propanol, ethanol, and other alcohols. An advantage of this Epurga approach is that MoO3 functions as a water-gas shift catalyst, within the alcohol synthesis temperature range. This eliminates a need for an additional water-gas shift step.
